32 Marathons in 32 days in 32 Counties

Autism Parenting could be described as a bit of a marathon; Difficult at first, you need to train very hard, build up your stamina and learn the right technique, but once you find your rhythm - it does get easier over time.

Having said that - your kids will need intensive help from people outside of your immediate family, and that's where the sprints come in. Teachers, Therapists, Tutors and even the extended family can dash in, give you a break, make a few quality observations and implement a few changes, then dash back out again for a rest before (hopefully) coming back to relieve you.

But you are the one on the long road, the one who has the stamina to go up and down hill, pacing  yourself when neccesary and, when everyone else is exhausted, looking for and finding that extra burst to get you over the finish line for another day - whenever that day might end.

Gerry Duffy and Ken Whitelaw know this - and inspired by their long term friendship of Irish Autism and a number of Autism Families, they will run 32 marathons in 32 consecutive days in the 32 counties of Ireland to raise money for this worthy charity.

Gerry Duffy, one of the long distance runners taking on this feat said:

“The challenge will be tough but myself and Ken are ready to take it on. This is a great cause and we are determined to succeed and raise as much money as possible for Irish Autism Action. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity to run a marathon in your home county and we’re encouraging people to come along and run with us in their local area.”

A number of high profile celebrities have come on board to lend their support including Eamon Coughlan, Dara Ó Sé, Niall Breslin and Bernard Flynn by acting as a race starter in different counties.

In fact some celebrities like Keith Duffy, Norman Wiliamson and Niall Breslin have said they will join Gerry and Ken by running some miles with them along the way.

Keith Duffy and Brian Kennedy have agreed to run the entire 26.2 miles in Dublin, the first leg of this amazing challenge.

Kevin Whelan, Chief Executive Officer for Irish Autism Action said:

“We are thrilled that the lads have decided to take on this challenge in aid of our charity. It will be a fantastic achievement for all the runners involved and we will be encouraging communities nationwide to get behind the lads and support them. Whether that be through running along with Gerry and Ken or giving them a cup of water to revive them on their way.”

If you feel like you could give a cup of water, or something more along the way, please go to the website HERE  and register your support.

You don't have to do the whole 32 counties - one will do nicely and you have the option of a half marathon at walking pace if you prefer. Or, just make a donation on the my charity website HERE.

You will need to raise €1,000 for the full or €600 for the half and you have 7 months to do it, so please, get your family and friends behind you and register now, to be part of something fantastic, in 2010.
