Our aims then and still are to:
1. Through the group structure to act as a support network for parents, carers and individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome
2. To be proactive in expanding the knowledge of the syndrome within the educational system.
3. To help create awareness of the syndrome within the workplace.
4. To advocate and be involved at all levels of policy and planning for those with A.S.
5. To link with agencies, service providers and organizations to seek support for individuals with Asperger’s and their carers.
6. To provide social inclusion for individuals with the syndrome.
7. To fundraise for respite.
8. To lobby for supported accommodation for the adults.
Achievements
1.We now have forty members ranging in age from six to thirty four.
2. We have had a very successful day out in Dublin zoo this year for nineteen parents and nineteen children.
3. We are at time of going to press running a Drama Therapy courses for our younger groups.
4. In conjunction with the Drama Therapy courses three parents are being trained to run the course in the future.
5. Two of our parents have had meetings with H.S.E. representatives to produce a document for best practice, for the setting up of a pilot support scheme, for independent living for six of our adult members. Talks with the H.S.E. on this project are on-going.
For parent meetings, as the needs of the group differed, it was agreed to divided our group into an under sixteen and an older group.
We feel it’s important for parents to work together to identify and achieve the present and future needs of Asperger’s individuals and their carers.
